Victim Impact Statements  -  PEOPLE  Matter !

The minority Conservative government's income trust proposals have had a terrible impact on many ordinary Canadians.

It seems policy-makers gave little or no consideration to the human impact.  In a country ordinarily known for its compassion, this stands out as a glaring mistake and injustice.

Some have publicly expressed how this has affected them on other websites.  To give you a better sense of the human aspect, we put together the following list of posts from some sites (edited for spelling, grammar and brevity). (Note: only posts where a name was given on those other sites were used in this compilation.  Though due to privacy law concerns, we have not reproduced the names here.  A list of sites drawn from is available upon request.)

In their own words:

(1)                 “I've lost 25% of my life savings, and being a senior, I have no way to recover.  So after 45 year in the work force, all our dreams of a happy retirement gone in a flash.

(2)                 “I have suffered a large loss to my investment assets.  We only have a total of $20,000 in pension income from CPP & OAS, not like government or quasi government pensions to live on.  We must rely on the income from investments to provide us with a decent standard of living.  You have now cut our income from our RRIF's by a substantial amount which will work out to 50% less than what we were earning previous to the Halloween Massacre.”

(3)                 “My small retirement portfolio is down 30% from the fallout related to your trust announcement.  I am a sole surviving spouse who supports her 89 year old mother in extended care facility.”

(4)                 “The value of my trusts have dropped $60,000 PLUS.  I retired last year after 44 years of work and will be 65 in March/07.  I am on a fixed pension income and my Income Trusts were my cushion.  My dream retirement present to myself has been cancelled which was a VIA rail trip across Canada, small but it meant a lot to me.  How could you do this to retirees?????  My retirement way of life has and will change drastically not to mention our health.”

(5)                 “My own portfolio losses, including my wife’s holdings and my grandchildren’s RESP, are currently circa $50,000.  We are 74 years old and rely on our savings to augment our government pensions, as we have no pensions from employment.  Is this “fair”?”

(6)                 “I'm 62 years old, I run portfolios for 10 other seniors.  One has had cancer, other sugar diabetes, and one has a nine year old daughter (adopted).  They all depended on the income trust for money to live on, we are not rich.  It has been a disaster, people our age can't get our life savings back.  Just the stress has caused ill health.  I feel terrible and my health has been affected.  I feel Harper has not a moral fiber in his body.”

(7)                 “My wife and I are senior citizens who have a combined annual pension and old age benefits of $26,000.  In order to survive and maintain a decent standard of living, we have had to rely on income acquired by investing our savings.  We initially tried the stock market and mutual funds with some very negative experiences.  Thereafter we invested mainly in GIC’s, Bonds and Treasury Bills.  The returns were secure, but were barely above inflation.  Several years ago, when rates fell, we were forced to find ways to increase our income and discovered Income Trusts.  It looks like we will be going back to barely surviving on GIC’s, Bonds and T-Bills and the Banks and Financial Institutions will be winners.”

(8)                 "I myself will have to come out of retirement to look for a job to supplement my income but I am lucky because I still have my health - how many seniors have had their retirement dream smashed to pieces ?"

(9)                 "For years I have saved and contributed to an RRSP, so as to have some security in my retirement and have some extra besides CPP and OAS.  In my early days of investing in my RRSP, you could buy bonds paying 8-10%, now they only pay 3-4%, so I invested in income trusts.  My personal portfolio fell by 25% in value . . ."

(10)             "I am on disability, and was able to support myself by wisely investing what little money I have.  Because the Conservative government lied while campaigning, I may now become a burden on the system."

(11)            " As owners of a small business without a pension plan, we were hoping to rely on our Income Trust investments in large part to supply our income needs in our retirement. Your recent attack on Income Trusts has destroyed any chance of a decent retirement.  How do you plan to replace our loss?"

(12)             "I am 69 years old and I am a cancer patient.  Out of the income trust units I was able to afford my medicine (sometimes $200 a day).  So Mr. Harper, you got more money than you need, are you going to help me to pay for my welfare? I worked hard for 50 years in this Country."

(13)             Over a week later and our RRIFS are down over $100,000. We are 77 years of age and don't have a hope in hell of being around long enough to recoup.  The extra $1,000 and the proposed income splitting isn't going to come anywhere near helping.

(14)             An elderly couple who are neighbors have everything they have to live on in income trusts.  This will kill them.

(15)             I am retired and depend on this income to survive.

(16)             You robbed me of two years of savings and gave me nothing. I am a widow so what's the use of income splitting!

(17)             My wife and I have no pensions other than a total of $20,000 from our CPP and OAS. We have saved in our RSP’s (now RRIF’s) to provide for a comfortable income to supplement the CPP & OAS.  We will now experience further erosion of our investment assets, as GIC’s will only generate 40% of the income that we were producing from the income trusts.  As our assets erode we will then have to sell our home and move to a small apartment.

(18)             You lied and cheated me out of $35,000. I live on a pension of $1163 per month and will never, never forget this.

(19)             I am on disability and need trust income.

(20)             Yes, I lost a lot of my savings and I feel REALLY foolish. I've worked for the CDN government for 18 years and this is what they do to me (and many of my colleagues).

(21)             I watched over a quarter of my retirement portfolio evaporate on November 1st alone, and the losses continued from there. I have suffered a huge financial setback from which I shall never be able to recover..

(22)             I am by no means a rich investor.  On the contrary, I run my own small business, and started an RESP for my daughter, putting aside what money I could.  This action has really hurt us… and has hurt a lot of people I know.

(23)             I am 61 years of age and will retire, for health reasons, on December 31st . I have NO company pension and I receive early CPP of $588 a month.  My retirement savings have to support me.  I thought I did everything the right way, according to the rules.  My sheltered account was ‘valued’ at $360,000 on October 31, 2006. It went below $300,000 due to Mr. Flaherty’s announcement.  The investment returns on my retirement account are to pay for my cost of living including housing, food, drugs, dental, cable tv, telephone, etc with no money for luxuries.

(24)             I am 75 yrs old and my RRIF dropped from $200,000 to 160,000.

(25)             My parents are retired, 69 and 68 years of age.  They are regular folks of modest means who worked hard and saved for retirement. With interest rates so low in the past few years, they could not make ends meet on GICs yielding 3-4% . So like millions of other retirees, they put some of their savings into .. income trusts yielding between 7-10%.  . . .the value of my parents investments dropped by over $100,000 overnight !

(26)             Since the government announcement that they were breaking the now infamous promise, we have lost more than 20% of our RRSP capital (with more losses to come we are told).  This has wrecked our life savings and our retirement.

(27)             Nov.1-2, 2006 I lost $151,400 in value in my LIF and RIF account.  By Nov.15, 2006 I was down $170,000.  This is where I get all of my retirement income.  My mother-in-law … is 84 and only dropped $40,000 in value.  My mother-in-law earns approx. $800 per month.

(28)             I have never seen a government which feels so comfortable in destroying the dreams of so many different groups of people.

(29)             At 69 years I am now looking for work again because of the loss of income and value from my trusts.

(30)             I am now RUINED because of this!!!

(31)             I am a retiree and I have suffered immense losses.

(32)             Your actions have cost me the ability to retire at 65 in 3 years.

(33)             Heavily invested in royalty energy trusts as a stable source of income, over $100k has disappeared. I am 82 years old.

(34)             50 % of my whole life saving gone after October 31, 06.  How could you do that to me and all the good honest citizens who worked so hard and paid their taxes their whole life? My life has been shattered; I am contemplating dying instead of living my dreams.

(35)             This was handled very poorly. The cost to my wife and I will be felt for the rest of our lives.

(36)             How utterly devastating to lose so much money through the heavy handed actions of ones government.

(37)             I’m 52 years old, self employed most of my working life and of course no organized pension fund other than what I have managed to save over the years.  The future looks grim for us and many others, we will have less capital, less money to spend, less trips and our standard of living if and when we retire will be lowered substantially. With less spending from the so-called “boomers” what will happen to the Canadian economy.

(38)             You have ruined our retirement.

(39)             I am down over $50,000 from this ill-conceived decision.  This was funds in RRIF and LRIF accounts that I depend on in my retirement.

(40)             I've been a nervous wreck since this announcement. I cannot afford to retire now.

(41)             This is a real blow to myself and my wife as we are retired and living almost entirely off the proceeds of our investments.  With interest rates as low as they have been, we were attracted to income trusts with their higher returns but were cautious until Harper promised to leave them alone.  We are hurting now!

(42)             I am not going to be able to retire after losing 30% of my portfolio.

(43)             Thanks for taking a big chunk out of my college fund!?!?!?!

(44)             We can't live on OAS & CPP.  Choose not to be on public assistance.  Trusts were the only way we could retire.  Believed promises of government.  Big mistake.  Now what do we do?

(45)             My 72 year old father is down 80 000 due to your broken promises....

(46)             You killed my retirement plans, another 5 years now.

(47)             We are seniors and you have ruined our retirement.

(48)             "It's unfortunate"  That's what Mr. Prentice said... getting a parking ticket is "unfortunate" losing $ 200K of my portfolio value, because of ridiculous government policy is "criminal".

(49)             I am a 67 year old single Canadian trying to live on my O.A.S. Pension & Investments. Now you have cost me 30% of my investment capital.

(50)             This is ruining my retirement and faith in Canada's honor.

(51)             Your decision caused us 40% of our net worth & undue stress.

(52)             30 billion dollars lost in one day which translates into an average of $1000 per Canadian (all children and babies included).  Equivalent to $4000 for each Canadian family !!!

(53)             I am down over $100,000 from this ill-conceived decision and they have destroyed BILLIONs of ordinary Canadians’ hard earned retirement savings.

(54)             I have been wiped out because of Flaherty's draconian income trust tax proposals

(55)             The decision regarding income trusts and their future has cost my wife and I about $100,000 at the present of our capital.

(56)             Our lying Prime Minister has caused us to lose 19% of our hard earned savings.  I am disgusted!!  Retired vet.

(57)             As a result of the Conservative government’s announcement, I, like millions of other investors and retirees, have experienced a very substantial loss in my hard-earned savings and retirement funds.

(58)             Comforted by Mr. Harper's promise that his government would "protect seniors" and NOT tax income trusts, my husband and I went ahead and slowly added a number of trust to our RSP portfolios.  What a difference it made in our retirement income. So much better than a GIC or money market account. Good bye, Mr. Harper.  We won't miss you, after you lose the next election thanks to seniors like my husband and I!

(59)             I have been emotionally hurt by the Conservatives decision to tax income trusts. Due to capital loss and potential monthly income losses, my wife has put off retirement until

(60)             I am a retiree and I have suffered immense losses.

(61)             I have been wiped out because of Flaherty's draconian income trust tax proposals

(62)             We are a mediocre income family and our loses are HUGE

(63)             Pour avoir fait confiance a Mr Harper, je perds plus de 15000$ !

(64)             Thanks to your promise $20,000 from my RRSP investment is gone.

(65)             We are retirees - we have lost a huge amount of capital in our RRSP account - a lifetime of savings.

(66)             My retired in-laws have lost over $100,000 of retirement money.

(67)             You have destroyed my retirement.

(68)             I have lost $50,000 because of the broken promise.

(69)             Gutted my retirement savings.

(70)             Lost $50k of our retirement savings with no chance of recovery unless this or future government acts to correct this irresponsible action.

(71)             I have lost $150,000 dollars. This is my retirement

(72)             I will have to exit retirement and go back to work . . .

(73)             Your treachery and incompetence has reduced our retirement funds by 25%.

(74)             My wife, my children and their spouses, my grandchildren and myself will all be hurt by this betrayal.

(75)             The distributions paid by Canadian Income Trusts have helped secure my retirement and family's future, provided extra income to help make ends meet . . .

(76)             Between myself and two other family members you have wiped out $260,000 of our retirement portfolios.

(77)             I lost over $150,000 because of your lies.

(78)             My husband and I have no company pension plan. We have a self-directed RRSP to try and save for retirement. We lost a lot of money because of Mr. Harper's lie that he would not tax income trusts.  Furthermore its untrue to call RRSP's tax exempt -they are only tax deferred. We pay taxes anytime the funds come out. Trust holders probably pay a much higher rate of tax then businesses that have many ways to hide income. Lets get rid of the liars.

(79)             My retirement savings have decreased by 30% due to the irresponsibility of Mr. Flaherty.

(80)             My life savings took a tumble when your decision was announced.  I have no option other than to hope and pray that some of the stock's value will come back so I can sell it and not lose my retirement savings.
